Alisher Navoiy (February 9,1414-January 3,1501) was a Turkic poet, writer, politician, linguist, mystic and painter who is the greatest, representative of Chagatai literature. Navoiy believed Chagatai and other Turkic languages were superior to Persian for literary purposes, (a highly controversial view at that time). Navoiy is considered to be the founder of early Turkic literature throughout the Turkic speaking world, many places and institutions in Central Asia are named after him and he is revered as a national hero in present day Uzbekistan.
